Omdat relaties aan de hand van zowel gedrag en gedachten  (percepties) van de betrokken personen in kaart gebracht kunnen worden, is er een diversiteit aan methoden nodig.

Wanneer het gaat om Gedrag en interactie vormen observaties de meest aangewezen methode, terwijl bij Gedachten en meningen (percepties) vragenlijsten of interviews goede methodes zijn.
